Grindstone 2 Download

Wake up slackers! Stop wasting your time and use it for some productive purpose by keeping track of your time. Grindstone 2 is a free Windows based time tracking solution. A smart new way to use your time efficiently. You can download it here.

Create new tasks, start the timer. Finish the task, stop the timer. This can help you maintain an accurate time-sheet of your work. As soon as I started using this tool on my laptop, I started using my time more productively. I sue this tool in combination with the "To-Do" app of my iPod. One good feature is the Reports tool which helps you see a breakdown of the total time recorded at the end of the week/month. Just be honest to yourself while recording the times, to get an accurate report. For managers, it can be a great small tool (size - 4.3Megs) to manage your project. Additionally, you can export the task list into an XML file.

iPhone Unplugged

Read the fine in-depth specific details on how AT&T makes a profit with Apple's iPhone.

The typical iPhone components and their prices are as follows:

  • 16 GB flash memory from Toshiba - $24
  • Display module from Balda AG - $19.25
  • Touch screen assembly from Sharp - $16
  • Application processor from Samsung - $14.46
  • Baseband from Infineon - $13
  • Camera from Altus-Tech - $9.55
  • SDRAM from Samsung - $8.50
  • Bluetooth from Samsung - $5.95
  • Memory MCP from Numonyx - $3.65
  • RF Tranceiver from Infineon - $2.80
  • GPS Receiver from Infineon - $2.25
  • Triband Antenna from Murata - $1.35
  • Power IC Function from Infineon - $1.25
  • Audio Codec from Cirrus Logic - $1.15
  • Manufacturing Costs - $6.50
  • Other Parts - $48
The total built-up cost comes to about $179. While the advertised price is $199 with AT&T's 2-yr contract. AT&T pays Apple subsidies over the sale of each phone.

So basically the $199 phone costs AT&T an estimated $550. To cover the subsidy, it increased the data plan rate to 30 bucks a month from the earlier 20.

Over years, the real winner from the sale of iPhones will be AT&T. It enjoys the exclusivity with iPhone, with a guaranteed continuous stream of revenue.

Microsoft-Murdoch-Google Analysis

Presenting the "Big Fight" between Microsoft and Google. Rupert Murdoch was in news recently when he decided that the News Corp websites would not allowed to be indexed by Google. Apparently the move was pushed and secretly backed by Microsoft's Steve Ballmer. Lets analyse this step.

  • With this move, News Corp and its websites limit the exposure to internet users, by not being indexed by Google and rather showing up on Bing.

  •  News Corp would earn some quick short term cash from Microsoft as per the deal. This allows the media giant to quickly compensate for lagging internet ads+subscription revenue.

  • On the other hand, Microsoft will improve its PR with media firms. This deal is very much an implicit signal to publishers, media firms etc.
  • According to Google, the news items account for a very small percentage of the total searches all around the world.

  • It is perceived that Google doesn't like copyrights much. This deal may have some impact in Google's ambitions to scan all books and information to be made available to people.

  • All in all, the winner of this deal seems to be Rupert Murdoch.

Tomcat with Eclipse

This is a short tutorial to learn how to run Apache Tomcat server using Eclipse. Lets do it step by step.

  • Install Apache Tomcat 6.0 from here.
  • Unzip the zip file onto your local machine.
  • Now to run the Tomcat server, you need to go to command prompt. So type cmd.exe in Run. Am using the Windows platform. In the command prompt, go to the Apache folder/bin folder
  • Type in SET JAVA_HOME= The location where JDK is installed. In my case, C:\jdk1.6.0.
  • Now run startup.bat
  • This is the way to run the server for a single instance. The best way to avoid typing this command everytime you need to start server, is to modify startup.bat and shutdown.bat. So edit these 2 files by any editor like Notepad, EditPad or Wordpad and include the command SET JAVA_HOME=C:\jdk1.6.0
  • When you run startup.bat, you see another window of command prompt opening, detailing the initializtion and starting of the server. (For instance, typically the message ends with the line - INFO: Server startup in xxxx ms, where xxxx = the time taken to startup like 4318ms or 5124ms... anything).
  • To check if the server has started, go to your web browser and type in http://localhost:8080/ in the address bar. You should see a congratulations message. On the left panel of the page you can manage the server using administration tools.
  • In order to manage the server, you need to have the managing rights for access. So go the installed directory of Apache tomcat/conf folder. Edit the tomcat-users.xml file and add the following command:
  • So far we learnt how to install the tomcat server on the local machine. Lets now see how to run it using Eclipse. There are many plugins for Eclipse. The most preferred one is the Sysdeo tomcat plugin. Download it here.
  • After you download the zip file of the plugin (latest version is the 3.2.1), unzip it and cut/paste in the "plugins" folder of Eclipse's installed location.
  • Now start Eclipse.

  • Go to the Window menu and click Preferences.

  • In the preferences, you need to make changes for Tomcat. So choose the appropriate Tomcat version you're using. Also specify the Tomcat home i.e the exact location of where Tomcat is installed. Apply the settings.

  • So this is how you can start and stop Tomcat server using Eclipse. See the following change on the menu bar of Eclipse.

Though the exact amount of the deal is undisclosed, it is believed that Myspace will pay $9million to employees, thus totalling to $10million. Imeem is the 4th ad-supported online music service which has been sold for peanuts, considering the $30million raised in funding from investors. It's obvious that the Imeem assets would be merged with Myspace Music, which was launched in September 2008.

Key Java Concepts IV - Overridden Methods Basics

Today, we'll learn more about overridden methods. We can override a method when a subclass inherits a method from its superclass. The main advantage of overriding is that we can define the behavior that's specific to a particular class. We need to observe certain important rules while overriding methods.

  • The overriding method needs to have the exact argument list as the overridden method. By not doing so, we could get an overloaded method instead.
  • The overridden method should have the same return type as the overridden method.

  • "final" methods cannot be overridden.

  • The access level of overriding method CANNOT be more restrictive than the overridden method.

  • The access level CAN be lesser restrictive than its overridden method.
  • We cannot override "static" methods.
  • The overriding method CAN throw any number of unchecked runtime exceptions, even if it isn't declared in the overridden method.
  • The overriding method CANNOT throw the checked exceptions which haven't been declared in the overridden method.
  • However, the overriding method CAN throw lesser or narrower checked exceptions than those declared in the overridden method.
  • A subclass in a different package can override methods marked public or protected. But make sure the methods are not marked final or static.

  • The overriding method CANNOT have a more restrictive access modifier than the overridden method. i.e you cannot override a public method and mark it protected.
  • The overriding method must not declare a exception it will never throw.

  • A method can be overridden only if it can be inherited.
Illustration:

public class Car {
         public Tyre() {
                  System.out.println("Common Car Tyre");
        }
}

public class Camaro extends Car {
        public Tyre() {
                System.out.println("Special Camaro tyres");
       }

}

Key Java Concepts II - Constructors

This post will focus on the concepts surrounding Constructors in Java. So, here we go...

  • Constructors MUST have the same name as class.
  • A constructor is invoked when an object is created.
  • Constructors don't have a return type.
  • Interfaces never have constructors.
  • Constructors cannot be inherited, thus they cannot be overridden.
  • Constructors can use any access modifier.
  • The compiler will create a default constructor, even if you don't create one yourself.
  • Every class has a constructor. Even an abstract class has one.
  • The default constructor is a no-arg constructor with a call to super().
  • The constructor can be directly invoked using another constructor only i.e using a call to super() or this().
  • Calls to this() or super() cannot be in the same constructor. Either one can exist, not both.
  • this() may appear as only the first statement in a constructor.
  • Constructors can call other constructors and they can call constructors again, however it's advisable to use a call to super() as early as possible to avoid the explosion of stack.
  • The call to super() can be a no-arg call or may have arguments passed to the super constructor.
  •  Its perfectly legal to have methods and constructor with the same name and in the same class. However it's not considered to be a good programming style.
 Illustration:

class Foo {
    Foo() {} // this is the constructor.
}

In this case, when the compiler compiles it, it generates a default constructor. So, for the compiler, the above code will look like:

class Foo {
    Foo {
         super();
    }
}

Key Java Concepts I - Interfaces

    This is a part of a series of key important Java concepts to remember. Much of the fundamental points are based from a variety of books, forums, websites etc. The objective is to make these fundas handy at any moment. This post will cover the concept of Interfaces.
    •  Interfaces are like 100-percent abstract classes.
    • Interfaces methods are by default public and abstract - however the explicit declaration is optional.
    • Interfaces can be implemented by any class.
    • Interfaces can have constants.
    • Interface constants are implicitly public, static and final.
    • An interface can have only abstract methods - no concrete methods are allowed.
    • Interfaces cannot extend a class or implement any other interface.
    • However, Interfaces can extend as many interfaces as possible.
    • As you know, there is no multiple inheritance allowed in Java i.e a class cannot extend more than one class BUT a class can implement multiple interfaces.
    • The class implementing an interface can itself be abstract.
    • An abstract implementing class need not have to implement the interface methods, however the non-abstract (concrete) class MUST implement the methods if it implements an interface.
    Illustration:

    public abstract Sizeable{  // use of public modifier is optional, if you don't want default access
        public abstract  toDo();  // Note the abstract methods always end with a ; instead of {}
        public abstract doThis();
    }

    class Baloon implements Sizeable {}

    public class Tyre mplements Sizeable {}

      I see the Red Sea part in front of me
      I see the desert clouds bleed above me
      I'm with the prophets on the final destiny
      We'll fight the heathens and the ghost enemy

      This is the prophecy

      I see the money beggars on the last temptation
      We're marching now through the devastation
      I'm with the prophets on a mission of salvation
      Cities falling, nations falling nations

      This is the prophecy
      This is the prophecy

      I see the new millennium tribal warfare
      I see them blind sheep going nowhere
      The new exodus, just like they said
      I see the crown of thorns, you know I was there

      This is the prophecy
      This is the prophecy

      I see the times in this armaggideon
      I see the flag of the conquering lion
      I must reach the mountains of Zion
      I'm with the prophets and the prophecy goes on

      Alfred Hitchcock's Classics

      I just stumbled across an old Alfred Hitchcock DVD while cleaning up my room. I guess I had purchased it from Walmart a few years back.

      It's basically a compilation of 4 of his spine chilling suspense thrillers namely:

      • Jamaica Inn
      • Sabotage
      • The 39 Steps
      • Easy Virtue
      All these movies are masterpieces for sure. Though the horror, the suspense, the mystery, the thrill may seem a bit cliche in today's times, they were path-breaking for the old times for sure.

      Dope - Die Mofo Die lyrics

      I don't need your forgiveness
      I don't need your hate
      I don't need your acceptance
      So what should I do?

      I don't need your resistance
      I don't need your prayers
      I don't need no religion
      Run away, away from you!

      I don't do what I've been told,
      You're so lame why don't you just go?

      DIE MOTHERFUCKER DIE MOTHERFUCKER DIE! (x7)

      I don't need your present
      I don't need your pray
      I don't need your decision
      So what should I do?

      I don't need your approval
      I don't need your quote
      I don't need your lecture
      Run away, away from you!

      I'll be sorry when I'll go?
      You're so full of shit man just go!

      DIE MOTHERFUCKER DIE MOTHERFUCKER DIE! (x7)

      I don't need your forgiveness
      I don't need your hate
      I don't need your acceptance
      So what should I do?

      I'll be sorry so you said,
      Well I'm not sorry Bang you're dead!

      Netflix down for 5 hrs+

      The movie rental service Netflix was down on Monday 7am PDT for more than 5 hours. This was unusual as the typical site outages for maintenance last for about an hour. When contacted Steven Swasey, director of corporate communications, he declined to share the cause of outage but assured it wasn't related to maintenance. He also reaffirmed the customers that the databases were intact and that their movie selections were safe.
      Note that the company's website had gone down last July too for an extended period.

      Erin Andrews Peephole Video

      The internet is abuzz with the news of a peephole video featuring ESPN's hot newscaster Erin Andrews in the nude. The video was supposedly shot in a hotel, possibly with a spycam from her adjoining room. However, she is not sure where exactly the video was shot. Erin's lawyer attorney Marshall B. Grossman was determined to put the predator behind the bars. This is a clear case of privacy invasion. There are hundreds of websites and blogs having articles on this issue. You can find the video here. Erin Andrews issue has spread throughout like a wildfire. On the otherside, the controversy coupled with College Football has skyrocketed ESPN's ratings.

      Based on the investigations and leads, the cops have arrested the suspect Michael Barrett on the charges of interstate stalking. By the way, here are the screenshots of the video.

      David Letterman's sexcapades and Extortion scandal

      This very recent news  about David Letterman's sexcapades shook the city. With Letterman himself admitting to sleeping with female staffers, he accused the CBS producer Robert Halderman of trying to extort $2mn from him. Later the producer was arrested but he pled "not guilty" and was subsequently released on bail for a surety amount of $200,000.

      Latest update follows the revelation of Holly Hester that she had a secret relationship with Letterman. She claimed on TMZ about her affair with Letterman when she was an NYU intern. Earlier the New York Post reported Stephanie Birkitt, 1996 intern, to have slept with Letterman. Infact later, Birkitt was closely associated with Halderman, which shows how he came to know of Letterman's sexcapades. Some NYPost photos here.

      The story is getting spiced up every new day, with new secrets spilled out of the box. Jay Leno cracked some funny jokes on the issue.

      Stoned Crow review

       Rating - 4.0 / 5.0

      A few weeks back, I went for a casual date at some bar, but things didn't work out the way I hoped to... So here's a chronology of how things happened and how I stumbled across Stoned Crow.

      7.00 - 9.00pm   2-way text communication with the girl about ever-changing plans. We decide to meet at a bar at around 11.00
      11.30 - Girl arrives... girls make you wait (a universal truth)
      11.30 - 12.00  We have drinks in Bar 1. She says "the place is not good.. Its so crowded here... Maybe we should go to some other bar..." So we leave to a nearby bar some 3-4 blocks away...
      12.15   We arrive at a quieter Bar 2.
      12.15 - 1.30  We have drinks, chat for a while, snap some pics and suddenly she says she's got to go... I am like okay sweetie... your choice... it was really nice meeting you... She hugs and leaves... (Fuck ! What do I do know? am already losing patience - I say this in my mind :)
      I get bored and keep thinking about checking out some other bar... meet some random new chick... I love this city for the abundance of girls... You lose girl A, you win girl B... etc etc... Ok neways... so I callup my friend late at nite and he asks me to join them at Stoned Crow.
      2.15  I join my 3 friends and we have a beer.

      So here's how and why, Stoned Crow lifted my mood.

      + We toast on beer and absinthe and celebrate our bachelorhood :)
      + A great little place with an unpretentious look
      + Pretty good jukebox collection
      + Pool table
      + They were showing the Korean superhit film "Oldboy" on one tv.

      4.00  We leave as the bar is about to close... but hey we will come back...

      I just realised this is my longest review till date.
